I'm not an expert, but I do believe that Maiko names carry certain traditions to them. They're almost poetic in a sense, and are chosen to best represent the kind of Maiko they are in personality and such. Momohana's literal translation is "peach flower", which I believe carry a lot of secondary meaning in Japanese culture along the lines of "youth, innocence, purity, etc". Maiko names are chosen very carefully (hence Sumire's meeting with Mother). You can essentially think of Maiko names as their "stage names".
The momo in Momohana means hundred. It's different when it's used as a part of a term/name.
In this case it's meant to mean an abundance of beauty because she's very talented. It's explained in the manga.
bro this comfyyy
I'd prefer Sumire over Momohana but at least she doesn't have a ridiculous name like 'talula does the hula from hawaii' or 'X AE A-XII'.
I won't say Momohana is a stupid sounding name... but I really think so. BUt then I guess it's less mainstream than Sakura
The momo in Momohana means hundred. Her name basically means an abundance of beauty. It's pronunciation changes when it's a part of a term.
You won't ever find a maiko or geiko that has a name as simple as Sakura. Their stage names mean something, but there are names with it. The closest I can think of would be "Ouka", which is an unusual pronunciation for the flower.
A name really doesn't matter, idk why some people think a name would effect how you look, act, personality.
It's a stage name and they have meaning. Also, when maiko receive their name, it means they've finally taken their first step to being a pro. Everybody in town calls you by it, private or business. The only person that calls Momohana "Sumire" is Kiyo.
okay but why is Kiyo shoveling snow in shorts?? like i get that she's wearing a jacket and scarf but still... odd choice in my opinion xD
